About “Moose”: Steamboat-native Jim “Moose” Barrows began ski jumping at the tender age of five. In 1965, he qualified for the U.S. Ski Team and competed in the World Championships in Portillo, Chile. Three years later, Moose was awarded a scholarship which provided him with his first pair of new Alpine skis. From there he qualified for the Rocky Mountain Division to the Junior National Championships. He soon became the nation’s premier four-event skier, winning several NCAA skimeister titles and was tagged “Moose” by his CU coach, Bob Beattie, who helped him perfect his skills.

In 1967, he finished third in the First World Cup Downhill race ever held in the United States and finished the seventh in FIS World Downhill’s ranking. Then, physical setbacks from a substantial injury sustained at the Olympics in 1968 led Jim to take a break from skiing to pursue a degree in business from the University of Denver. In 1971, he returned to the slopes to compete in the Pro Tour, and he finished third overall in 1972. He has since coached junior skiers and the U.S. Men’s Downhill Team. Jim also devotes much of his time to promoting skiing and started a scholarship fund to provide junior skiers in the Yampa Valley with the means to train.
